Overview: The journal club will continue in Winter 2017. The club meets separately from the main track of the Applied Mathematics and Computation seminar but their scopes/areas overlap. Everybody is invited provided they come prepared. The student participants learn how to read scientific papers effectively and how to extract and convey their main ideas.

Faculty
Contact in Winter 2017: Malgorzata Peszynska. I will send the articles to those attending two days before the AMCJ club meeting. You should not spend more time than 2h per article.

Faculty also involved in 2010-14: Vrushali Bokil,Nathan Gibson,Thomas Humphries, Patrick DeLeenheer,Mina Ossiander,Malgorzata Peszynska, Ralph E. Showalter.

Topics: So far we have discussed articles on wildfire models, complex networks, a-posteriori analysis, fluid dynamics and chemical reactions at multiple scales and with multiple resolution, domain decomposition, numerical stochastic modeling, infectious diseases, criminal behavior, crowd dynamics, cancer models, approximation theory, multipole methods, multilevel Monte-Carlo methods, semiconductor modeling, and many others.

We discuss articles that are not necessarily in anybody's field of expertise, so almost everybody is most of the time slightly outside their usual "comfort zone".

How to participate: get on the mailing list so you can get the article(s) before the meeting. For each meeting, we have presenters and moderators, and the presenters are selected by lottery. Everybody else has to ask at least one question or make at least one comment about the article.

Possible questions include:

  • what is the most significant result presented
  • does the result represent progress along a well-defined track ? or rather a breakthrough ? or none of the above ?
  • is the paper well written
  • what is the most interesting aspect
  • what is the deepest mathematical issue mentioned
  • what is the hardest computational concept presented
  • how useful is the result to the field
  • what is the field of the paper ? (for example, use Mathematics Subject Classification)
  • if you were the referee, what suggestions would you make to the author ?
