The mathematics of tiling has undergone a transformation from its roots in recreational mathematics many years ago to its status today as a lively area of research with fundamental ties to combinatorics, group theory, and topology. In this talk we focus on the tile counting group and its connection to the topology of 2-complexes. With this topological perspective we may derive some tile invariants that allow us to solve some tiling questions. We draw from tiling questions that have motivated undergraduate research projects with students at Linfield College.
