Abstract: 

We will use statistical thermodynamics to answer a simple question: what happens when an adsorbent is allowed to exchange gas with a rubber balloon? Richard Feynman described rubber as 'molecular spaghetti'. A statistical mechanical treatment of this molecular view of rubber captures the relationship between the pressure of gas in a rubber balloon and its radius. As a consequence of the non-monotonicity of this relationship, a gas-adsorbent-balloon system presents multi- and in-stabilities.
