Textbook: John W. Lee and Stephen D. Scarborough, Matrix and Power Series Methods (Fifth Edition)

Learning goals: MTH 306 will move at a fast pace from day one. We plan to cover most of the textbook. Topics will include convergence and divergence of series with emphasis on power series, Taylor series expansions, convergence tests for power series, and error estimates for truncated series used in practical approximations. Also, introduction to matrix algebra, determinants, systematic solution to linear systems, and eigenvalue problems.

Prerequisites: MATH 252 or instructor's approval.

Homework: There will be nine homework assignments. The assignments will be collected at the beginning of Tuesday recitation, together with the quiz consisting of 1-2 homework problems and 1-2 related problems. Late homework will not be accepted.

Homework #1 (due Tuesday, September 26):  Sec. 9.6 (p.129) #12, 20;   Sec. 10.9 (p.140) #2,4,6

Midterms: There will be a midterm exam on Tuesday, October 24, 7:00 pm - 8:20 pm. Location TBA.
The midterm will cover the material presented in lessons 9-15 of the textbook.
The midterm is closed books. However, an 8.5 by 11 inch sheet of notes is allowed with HANDWRITTEN notes on both sides. Simple calculators are allowed. The graphic calculators, and other electronic devices that can perform linear algebra and calculus tasks are prohibited. Cell phones must be turned off. For midterm preparation, please study lesson 19 in the textbook. Check out sample exams at the end of the book.

Final Exam: date TBA. Location TBA.
