Course information: CRN 12583 ( MTH 621 ) CRN 13588 ( MTH 657 ). Credits: 3.00.
Student preparation: the students should have a solid background in differential equations, senior level/ advanced calculus and linear algebra. Please contact the instructor with questions.
Syllabus: This class is the first one in a year-long sequence MTH 621 - MTH 622 - MTH 623. In principle, each of these classes can be taken separately but it is best if they are taken in order. May be repeated for credit (use MTH 657, CRN 13588).
In the course we will cover the following topics:
  • Origins and applications of mathematical models of diffusion and wave equation, mechanical vibrations, and flow and transport models. Models of other phenomena where PDEs and IE are used. Initial and boundary value problems for these equations. We will study mostly linear problems but introductory material on nonlinear problems will be also developed as time permits.
  • Properties of solutions, analytical expressions whenever available, (some) separation of variables, Fourier techniques, Green's functions, maximum principle(s).


Textbook: I will use material from the following textbook as well as some downloadable notes TBA.
  • R. Guenther and J. Lee, Partial Differential Equations of Mathematical Physics and Integral Equations, Dover, 1996


Exams and Grading: HW counts as 40% and Exams as 30% each.
Midterm: Nov. 4 (Friday), in class.
Final Exam: Friday, Dec. 9, 2011, at 7:30am.
Course Outcomes: A successful student will be able to
  • Provide derivation of fundamental models of physical phenomena leading to partial differential equations of first order and of canonical types for second order
  • Find solutions to initial and boundary value problems for such equations when closed form is available
  • Carry out analyses of well-posedness of such problems
