MTH 607: Introduction to Mathematics Research at OSU, Winter, 2005

LECTURES: W 1600 - 1650 Gilkey Hall 104 CRN 28666
Coordinator: R.E. Showalter Kidder 368 show@math.oregonstate.edu

This seminar focuses on mathematics research opportunities at OSU. The purpose of the seminar is to give first- and second-year students (but others are welcome) a glimpse of various areas of mathematical research represented within the Mathematics Department and interdisciplinary research opportunities across campus. Each meeting will be an expository presentation by a faculty member, postdoc, or graduate student, who will give an overview of the type of problems with which the individual or an affiliated research group is involved. This is intended to help students to make more informed choices when it comes time to pick a dissertation area and a supervisor. The presentations will also provide some perspectives on the nature of mathematical research and the experience of doing such research and, in this way, will contribute to a student's general professional development.
Format: Meets once per week, register (or not) for 1 - 3 credits (P/N).
