MTH 607: Introduction to Mathematics Research at OSU, Spring, 2006

LECTURES: W 1200 - 1250 Gilkey 104 CRN 38222
Coordinator: R.E. Showalter show@math.oregonstate.edu

This seminar focuses on mathematics research opportunities at OSU. The purpose of the seminar is to give first- and second-year students (but others are welcome) a glimpse of various areas of mathematical research represented within the Mathematics Department and interdisciplinary research opportunities across campus. Each meeting will be an expository presentation by a faculty member, postdoc, or graduate student, who will give an overview of the type of problems with which the individual or an affiliated research group is involved. This is intended to help students to make more informed choices when it comes time to pick a dissertation area and a supervisor. The presentations will also provide some perspectives on the nature of the mathematics research experience and, in this way, will contribute to a student's general professional development.
Format: Meets weekly: Wednesdays at noon. Brown bag lunches are most welcome.
Registration for this seminar is possible but not expected.
