MTH 256: Applied Differential Equations, Spring, 2008

LECTURE: MWF 1100 -- 1150 Rogers 230 CRN 30517
Instructor: R.E. Showalter Kidder 298b show@math.oregonstate.edu
Assistant: Shari Ultman Kidder 338 ultmans@math.orst.edu
Office Hours: Wednesday 12:00 - 1:00pm, Kidder 338
Thursday 12:00 - 2:00pm , Math Learning Center
For additional help, see Math Learning Center and Web Study Guide for Ordinary Differential Equations

Topics: First order linear and nonlinear equations, and second order linear equations. Applications, especially mechanical oscillators. Introduction to the Laplace transform and higher order equations. Solution methods and applications appropriate for science and engineering.
Textbook: Boyce and DiPrima, Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, 8th ed., Wiley.
Homework will be assigned in Lecture Periods as a topic for Recitation Periods, but it will not be collected. Two fifty-minute Tests will be given in the Lecture period. Test problems come from the assigned Homework. Final Exam counts the equivalent of two Tests. The Grade for the course is determined by the best three of these four scores. Absence from a Test gives a score of 0 for that Test. The Final Exam will be comprehensive and will serve as a make up for one Test; no excuse from a Test is necessary, and there is no excuse for absence from the Final Exam. Lectures will be on MWF and Recitations on Thursday.
