Prerequisite: MTH 111: College Algebra
A quick review of the most commonly used formulas appears on page A18 of the
text (first page of Reference Table 10 in Appendix B); a longer review appears
in Chapter 0. The exponent rules are summarized
here.
You must be comfortable with these formulas in order to do well in the
course. If you are rusty, it is highly recommended that you review this
material before the term begins if possible. You can find this
material in most texts on College Algebra and Precalculus, such as
Calculators:
You are strongly encouraged to have a graphing calculator such as the TI-85,
which you may use on all exams, quizzes, and homework. However, no exam or
quiz problems will require the use of a calculator, and most if not all
homework problems which indicate the use of a calculator can be solved without
one. You may learn more by first trying to solve the problem by hand, then
using the calculator to check your answer.
Your TA may be able to assist you with specific questions, but it is your
own responsibility to learn how to use your calculator.
Grades:
Your grade will be based on the best 4 of the following 5 scores (100 points
each):
Homework:
You should try the
suggested homework problems
as soon as possible after the corresponding lecture, and certainly before the
next recitation. Homework will not be graded, but forms the basis for the
quizzes.
Quizzes:
There will be a 15 minute quiz most weeks at the end of the recitation
section. The quizzes will be based on the homework problems corresponding to
material covered through the previous Monday; they are closed book,
but open notes.
Exams:
There will be 2 evening midterms, scheduled for Tuesday 3 February and Tuesday
24 February, both from 6-7:20 PM. The final is scheduled for Tuesday, 17
March, from 7:30-9:20 AM. All exams will be closed book; the use of a
3×5 index card of notes (and a calculator) is permitted.
Midterm 1 covers §1.1-§1.6 and §2.1-§2.6.
Midterm 2 covers §3.1-§3.5 and §4.1-§4.5.
The final is comprehensive; it covers the above material (roughly 50%) plus
§5.1-§5.5 (roughly 50%).
(The material in the additional sections listed in italics on the
schedule will not be tested.)
Makeups:
Makeup exams will only be given in truly exceptional cases; most situations
are automatically covered by the ability to drop 1 grade. There will be no
makeup quizzes.
MLC:
The Mathematics Learning Center (MLC) provides drop-in help for all lower
division mathematics courses. The MLC is located on the ground floor of
Kidder Hall (Kidder 108), and is open M-F from 9 AM to 4 PM, from the second
week of term through Dead Week (Week 10).
