Abstract: 

We overview the difficulties in analysis of nonlinear evolution PDEs arising in various applications of interest in which the coefficients either vanish or blow up. The presentation will follow the monographs on Porous Medium Equation by Vazquez, and on Phase Transitions by Visintin as well as some recent publications on the topic. The focus is on contrasting the degenerate and/or singular case with the "usual" smoothing behavior observed in linear parabolic problems. The applications include phase field models for phase transitions and coarsening, and biofilm models.
