Abstract:

We introduce a unified view on two-dimensional transport barriers in general

unsteady flows. Seeking transport barriers as least deforming material lines,

we obtain transport barriers as minimal geodesics under an appropriate metric

induced by the flow on the space of initial positions. The geodesics are

obtained as a solution of an ordinary differential equation, and hence can be

extracted in a smooth, parametrized form. We show applications to model

flows and geophysical data sets.
