Abstract:

Geometric group theory entails the understanding of algebraic and geometric properties of countable groups by studying their actions on geometric spaces. General notions of negative curvature on these spaces have been successfully used to approach different problems in low dimensional topology and infinite group theory. In this talk, I will give a overview of this exciting and relatively new field. In the second half of the talk, I will discuss some recent joint work on groups acting on small cancellation complexes and the notion of coherence (joint work with D.Wise)
