Abstract: 

The finite best constants of Diophantine approximations for irrational numbers and real indefinite binary quadratic forms form the so-called Lagrange and Markov spectra. After recalling some classical results about these spectra (mostly following Cusick--Flahive's book on this subject), we will discuss how the tools from the theory of uniformly hyperbolic systems (shadowing lemma, thermodynamical formalism, etc.) provide useful insights on the fractal geometry of these spectra. (This talk will be based on joint works with Delecroix, Lima, Moreira, Pollicott, Vieira and Vytnova.)
