Abstract:

Modeling physical or biological processes in media

where the parameters controlling key processes are

discontinues require a careful analysis of the behavior

system at the discontinuities.  Mathematically one way

to tackle this problem is to impose interface conditions

relating the solution at the interface with the limiting values

from either side of the discontinuity.  I will review interface

conditions derived using `conservation laws' or other

basic guiding principles and describe some of the large

scale consequences of different interfaces.  This is based

on joint work with Thilanka Appuhamillage, Vrushali Bokil,

Roy Haggerty, Sharon Harrada, Jorge Ramirez, Ed Waymire,

Brian Wood and Ricardo Matano.
