 The study of dispersion in domains where the coefficients of the modeling equations have discontinuities across hypersurfaces is a problem of contemporary interest with application to physical, earth and biological sciences.   


In this talk, I will review results obtained in the last few years with former students and colleagues at OSU on the properties of solutions of advection diffusion/dispersion equations in fragmented environments.  Examples illustrating the applications of these equations will be included as they motivate the  questions pursued in the research.   A key aspect of the theory is understanding the large scale effect that the interface condition, imposed at the hypersurface of discontinuities of the coefficients, have on quantities of interest (eg break through curve in hydrology, occupation time in biology and local time in theory of stochastic processes).
