Abstract:

Given a Lie group G and compact subgroup K, we may consider the homogeneous space G/K and endow it with a G-invariant Riemannian metric. Among all the choices of G-invariant metrics, is there a most natural or best choice of metric on G/K?

We will investigate this classical question by looking for metrics with nice curvature conditions and those with a large amount of symmetry (even more than just being homogeneous). All the ideas will be motivated by examples and the talk will be accessible to graduate students.
