Abstract:

Stable homotopy theory predicts that there is a sequence of generalized cohomology theory with deep relations to geometry and analysis. The first two are ordinary cohomology and K-theory and are well-understood. The leading candidate for the third is "elliptic cohomology", which relates homotopy theory, the theory of elliptic curves, and string theory. I will describe some of the signal results in the subject, and survey some current areas of active research.
