Abstract:

Given an equation w(t)=1 where w(t) in G*(t) is a word with coefficients in G (written multiplicatively), we can ask whether this equation has a solution in some larger group that contains G. We will state some results in this area, and then work through one or two examples that demonstrate how crashing cars on S^2 tells you when these conclusions hold.
