Abstract: 

A cyclically presented group G = G(n,w) is specified by a word w on a fixed set of n generators for a free group. Defining relations for G are w together with its translates under the shift automorphism that cyclically permutes the free group generators. The shift also defines an automorphism of G and the dynamics of this shift have been related to the existence of geometric structures on three-manifolds with fundamental group G. I will show how techniques from asphericity and cohomology of groups relate to dynamics of the shift. Applications include modest extensions of known results about three-dimensional geometric structures.
