The classification of manifolds of positive and non-negative sectional
curvature is a long-standing open problem. In the last twenty years or so,
important advances have been made by introducing symmetries.  I will
give some history and talk about the current state of the problem and then,
provided there is time, I will talk about some recent results on low-dimensional
non-negatively curved manifolds admitting isometric actions of maximal
and almost maximal symmetry rank.
