Continued fractions have applications in both Diophantine approximation and the arithmetic of quadratic field extensions. In this expository talk, we first give a brief overview of continued fractions in the classical setting, then turn to the setting of function fields. Results going back to Abel and Chebyshev, and further explored in recent decades, relate periodic continued fractions over functions fields to the divisor at infinity of hyperelliptic curves.
