The Oregon State University Mathematics Department hosted the 40th Annual Lonseth Lecture and Award Ceremony on May 1st, 2025. Established in 1985, the Lonseth Awards recognize students and faculty who excelled throughout the previous year. The awards are named in honor of Arvid T. Lonseth, professor emeritus and former chair of the mathematics department.

Undergraduate Awards

Joel Davis Student Award

Established in memory of former faculty member, Joel Davis, this award celebrates excellence in mathematics by an undergraduate.

Botond Gabor Eross Math Memorial Scholarship

This fund was established from proceeds of the life estate of Jolan Eross, mother of Botond Gabor Eross. The award provides scholarships for outstanding mathematics students.

Edward H. Stockwell Award

The family of Edward H. Stockwell established this scholarship in 1997 in his memory to benefit an undergraduate mathematics major.

Harry and Molly Goheen Memorial Scholarship

To a junior or senior majoring in mathematics or computer science who expresses the desire to work in the field of mathematics or computer science following graduation. (Every other year alternating with Computer Science)

Mathematics Inclusion Award

Recognizes a student who works to develop and share meaningful mathematical ideas and contributes to a climate of mathematics in which people from any background feel invited and welcome.

Actuarial Science Award

Initiated in 1984 by members of the Portland Actuarial Club to support students in mathematics with interests in actuarial science and financial mathematics.

Gary L. Musser Award

Established in 1997 to award an outstanding prospective elementary or middle school teacher. The recipient will have completed MTH 211- 212 and a junior-level problem-solving course.

Paul Copson Memorial Scholarship

To a junior or senior in the Department of Mathematics or Physics, who has shown good character, promise in scholarship, and general scientific aptitude. Established in memory of Paul Copson by his mother, June Copson (OSU 1915).

G.V. Copson Scholarship

To a junior or senior who shows academic promise in the College of Science. Established by June Seeley Copson (OSU 1915), in memory of her husband, Godfrey V. Copson (OSU 1911), formerly head of the Department of Microbiology.

WIC Culture of Writing Award

This award recognizes outstanding mathematical writing in a writing intensive mathematics course.

William Lowell Putnam Competition

This award recognizes top participants in Putnam 2023. It is a notoriously challenging exam, held on the first Saturday of December.

William F. Burger Graduate Teaching Award

Established in memory of former faculty member William F. Burger, this award recognizes superior teaching by graduate students

Established to honor the career of former Department chair Tom Dick, this scholarship honors his commitment to math education through support for graduate students with demonstrated financial need who intend to pursue a career in math education.

Awards given by organizations outside the department

Mathematical Sciences Graduate Internship (MSGI)

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Mathematical Sciences Graduate Internship (MSGI) program is administered by ORAU through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) under an agreement between NSF and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). ORISE focuses on scientific initiatives including educating the next generation of scientists.

NETL Postgraduate Research Program

The NETL Postgraduate Research Program (PGRP), managed by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, is a high-intensity program designed to not only identify recent master’s and doctoral graduates of high promise, but to continue developing advanced research skills within those graduates.

Oregon Lottery Graduate Scholarship

2025-2026 winner: Logan Richard

Funds for this scholarship are provided through the Oregon State Lottery and will be awarded to domestic or international graduate students enrolled in an advanced degree program at Oregon State University. These scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need.


Dissertation Completion Award

2025-2026 winner: Wei Xi Boo

The Dissertation Completion Award is administered by the Office of Graduate Education and is awarded to outstanding domestic or international students who are in the final stages of their dissertations.

Given by current graduate students to a faculty member in recognition of their impact through teaching and research.
