Abstract: 

The goal of this first expository talk is to introduce some fundamental concepts of continuum mechanics that are used to describe classical mathematical models of deformation and flow. Methods of calculus and linear algebra will be used to relate these to the geometry behind these concepts. These are used to formulate the motion of solids or fluids as initial and boundary-value problems for (systems of) partial differential equations.
