Abstract:

Time dependent wave propagation problems have many applications including in acoustics, electromagnetics and geophysics. In this expository talk, we will focus on Maxwell's equations and discuss some of the most popular finite difference and finite element methods for their numerical discretization. In particular, we will start with the famous Yee scheme, also called the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method for the numerical discretization of the Maxwell system and discuss variational extensions of this scheme.
