Abstract: 

When dealing with first order linear PDEs taking values in a Hilbert space, one arrives at the notion of a semi-group of operators. For some equations, these semi-groups of operators need clever ideas to show existence. This talk takes one of the clever ideas, the Yosida approximation, and discusses properties of equations defined by the approximations, the so-called pseudo-parabolic equations.

We will compare the properties of the approximation to another class of PDEs, the parabolic equations. The talk then extends to a Yosida approximation applied to a nonlinear equation, and details results on this subject.
