Abstract:

The American Mathematical Association of Twp-Year Colleges has set forth guidelines for hiring new instructors to teach at the community college level. In Oregon, similar guidelines are are followed for hiring Instructors (not professors). These guidelines dictate that one must earn their Master's in mathematics or a related field. There are no
formal requirements for teaching experience, and in many places having coursework relating to education is actually viewed as a waste of time by potential employers. Are these requirements enough for a new instructor to be comfortable? Are these education related courses actually detrimental to those that have taken them, or are they helpful in some aspects?

I will present some preliminary findings.
