Abstract:

Rotation groups are the simplest Lie groups, and play a fundamental role in describing the continuous symmetries of the world around us. This talk presents an elementary introduction to the study of these Lie groups, paying particular attention to certain non-compact cases that arise in nature. This discussion will also provide a natural introduction to the closely related notion of a Clifford algebra, the mathematical framework for discussing the "gamma matrices" used in quantum field theory to describe fundamental particles.
