In the early 1970's Ekeland established his variational principle and Caristi found a fixed point theorem. These were soon seen to be equivalent, and consequences of a simple ordering principle. Kirk proposed a possible extension of Caristi's theorem. Khamsi (2009) showed that Kirk's specific suggestion did not hold, but did establish a small extension. We show that no further extension is possible.
