First we model a sedimentary basin as a saturated granular deforming porous medium of sand or silt consolidating due to its own weight and an overburden pressure. This leads to a single degenerate PDE of pseudo-parabolic type. This is joint work with Dwight Holland. Next we describe some of the issues in the development of a model of melt transport in the Earth's mantle.
