Marine Protected Areas (MPA's) have been introduced as a regulatory instrument to protect and manage marine environments. I will survey results that were the main thrust of the recent MS Thesis work James Rekow Master Thesis conducted under the supervision of Patrick DeLeenheer and myself. A central feature of the analysis aim at quantifying the effect of the interface between the MPA and the unprotected environment. In this model, differential equations with discontinuous coefficients are used together with conditions at the interface that, although local, could have large scale effect on the sustainability of the resources.
