In this seminar, we present our experiences as interns at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBL) over the summer of 2017. We will cover the entire process, from securing the position and funding to the day-to-day existence of living and working in Berkeley, CA. We will then share some of the more general technical skills developed at the lab; visualization, package management, etc., as well as those skills specific to our work at the lab; use of Chombo, LBL's software for adaptive solutions of partial differential equations. Chombo is a powerful PDE solver, featuring time-accurate, conservative discretizations of complex PDE's and block structured adaptive mesh refinement. Chombo is used in a variety of research areas, spanning shallow water simulations to the dynamics of ice sheets to porous media flow. Our results focus on porous media.
