Abstract:

Associated to topological spaces are a sequence of groups, called the homotopy groups. These are an invariant of the space and for suitably nice spaces, carry a tremendous amount of information. In low dimensions particularly, these groups are intimately tied to problems in combinatorial group theory. We define these groups and present Whitehead's classification of these groups in dimension 2 as "G-crossed modules."
