Abstract:

The speaker will present his experience as an NRT Fellow in 2016-17. NRT http://marinerisk.ceoas.oregonstate.edu/ is a program funded by NSF which forms transdiciplinary teams of students to do research in marine sciences, combined with mathematical and statistical elements. Will's team members included Harrison Ko from Coastal Engineering and Michael Dumelle from Statistics. They formed the team to work on tsunami forecasting and uncertainty quantification. The project was advised by the PhD advisers of Will, Harrison, and Michael (Drs Restrepo, Yeh, and Fuentes). Will also participated in an internship at PNNL (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory) in summer 2017, where he worked in the group Applied Statistics and Computational Modeling. In the talk Will describe his experience and provide tips for students interested in similar endeavors.
