The existence of an action by a compact isometry group is related to topological properties of the compact Riemannian manifold on which it acts. One hope is to determine the topological structure of positively and non-negatively curved manifolds with "large" isometry groups. This information could help us form a guiding principle in the search of new and interesting examples of manifolds with positive or non-negative curvature. In this talk we describe some classic and important results, and introduce recent work by C .Escher, C. Searle, W. Spindeler and M. Wiemeler.
