Abstract:

In the first part of the talk, I will provide enough background on L2- (co)homology to discuss the Davis-Okun conjection, a generalization of the Singer conjecture. The second half of the talk is about hyperplane arrangement. In a paper with M. Davis and K. Schere, we study the question of what is the minimum dimension of a contractible manifold which admits a proper action by the fundamental group of an aspherical hyperplane arrangement. This together with a calculation of L2- betti numbers of hyperplane arrangement by M. Davis, T. januszkiewicz and I. Leary shows that the Davis-Okun conjecture is true for hyperplane arrangment.
