Paper folding provides a rich source of problems in computational geometry, with applications from heart stent design to solar panel deployment (in fact featuring prominently in the 1996 Space Flyer Unit's 2D solar panel array). This talk will give a roughly historical discussion of the "classical" development of the mathematics of paper folding in the early 1900s, as applied to basic geometry constructions and solubility of polynomials, up to a survey of the contemporary perspective, especially with regards to computational questions, such as flat-foldability and circle-packing for origami design.
