Researchers have begun to develop games and investigate game-based learning because of the immense potential for games to engage learners. Game design research tends to have a narrow focus on specific game elements and their effects, or engages in a wide-ranging analysis of games in search of ubiquitous game features and elements. My research aims to consolidate much of the broader research into design and implementation principles for creating and using educational games. I will discuss my findings and use them to analyze existing games, with a brief discussion on best practices in using an educational game within an existing curriculum.
