Abstract:

The SIAM PNW (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Pacific Northwest Section) online talk will be given this October by Luminita Vese from UCLA. This event can be viewed online; local attendees are encouraged to gather locally in the conference room Kidd 358 for viewing.

Abstract of talk: Many inverse problems arising in image processing can be solved by variational methods. A functional is minimized, composed of a data fidelity term and a regularizing term. The regularizing term imposes a-priori constraints on the solution and makes the problem well-posed. The unknown is found in the appropriate space of functions that best characterizes the desired properties of the solution.
The Euler-Lagrange equation associated with the minimization is obtained and then solved using numerical methods. In this talk I will present several inverse problems arising in imaging applications and their solutions in a variational approach. Examples include image restoration, segmentation, decomposition, and medical applications such as image reconstruction in computer tomography. Theoretical and experimental results will be presented.

===============================================
The SIAM PNW Section https://sites.google.com/site/siampnwsection/home Seminar is a quarterly seminar presented by a distinguished speaker invited by the officers of the section. Suggestions for future speakers are welcome. Please email suggestions and requests for section involvement to one of the officers.

Due to the large geographic extent of our section, the seminar series consists of online talks only, currently one per academic quarter. The talks can be attended by clicking the link provided below, which will be live 15 minutes prior to the start of the talk. No gotomeeting account is necessary. Any computer with speakers or a headphone connection will allow one to attend the talk. A microphone is required to ask questions during or after the seminar. In some institutions the attendees gather in a seminar room to participate; this allows for more individuals to join the meeting in the case the event is heavily subscribed. In our department, the participants including the students from SIAM Student Chapter will gather in the conference room Kidd 358 for viewing.

How to participate online: join the meeting from your computer, tablet or smartphone.
