Abstract: 

q-hypergeometric series arise naturally in many areas of mathematics, from combinatorics and number theory to knot theory and vertex operator algebras. In many important cases these series are modular. However, there is no known method for proving this modularity directly from the q-hypergeomtric expression. In this talk I will survey Bailey pairs, which provide a way to convert q-series to recognizable modular objects. Several examples will be given.
