This is a talk in the graduate seminar MTH 607: Building Inclusive, Equitable, Respectful and Welcoming Mathematical Communities.
What is the point of mathematics outreach? What role can outreach play in increasing inclusivity and diversity in mathematics? How can we design outreach efforts to align with the goals of increasing inclusivity and diversity? In this talk I will attempt to address these questions, drawing on information and research provided by OMSI together with insights gained from the numerous outreach efforts organized by myself and other members of the department over the past year. In addition to providing direct suggestions for effective outreach, we will also discuss our efforts at sustainability, what work still needs to be done, and how those who are interested can get involved.
