Title: Inclusive Mathematical Teaching: Multi-sensory Techniques
Abstract: College algebra is amongst the top failed courses in the nation, which is why it is important to explore new ways to connect the material with all our students. I propose that we begin to collaborate with special educators who are skilled in presenting mathematical topics to students who are visually impaired – because these educators use innovative tools, such as graphing aids, audio graphing calculators, tactile material, and large displays/print that would likely prove beneficial to visually able students. I would like to discuss some teaching strategies that create a more inclusive environment and allows students to rely upon multiple sensory channels to connect with the material.
