Abstract:

Title: High dimensional manifold and the Whitney trick

Abstract: Manifold is a key part of modern geometry which provides an abstraction of the geometric objects. While it is natural to think that the difficulty of study increases with the dimension of object, in reality the study is greatly simplified at dimension 5 and above. Central to this phenomenon is the Whitney trick which only fails at dimension 4. This talk aims give a brief overview on manifolds and the idea of the Whitney trick, as well as some results it helped to produces, many of which are fundamental to the entire field.
