In very reductive terms, most of modern research in number theory reduces to two questions: "What are prime numbers?" and "What are algebraic numbers?" The Langlands program is a vast set of conjectures, initially put forth by Robert Langlands, towards answering the second of these two questions. In this talk, we give a broad overview of some of the ideas, motivations, and questions present within the Langlands program, as well as some of the work that has been done, including Andrew Wiles' proof of Fermat's Last Theorem.
