Abstract: 

This talk will begin with a discussion of how important aspects of the theory of completely integrable systems manifest themselves in classical mechanics. I will then discuss how similar ideas come up in Riemannian and Lorentzian geometry. We will ease our way into the discussion of geometry using translation surfaces as an explicit example. This will then lead into a discussion of symmetry conditions that reduce the Yang—Mills equation and the vacuum Einstein equations. I will finish with a discussion of some open problems that I would like to attempt using these methods.
