Abstract:

The circulation of the world's oceans plays a major role in the global climate system, and it is also important in other areas such as weather prediction and the study of near-shore processes. This talk will provide an overview of some of the major features of ocean circulation, some features of the governing partial differential equations that have a particular impact on the numerical modeling of this circulation, and some aspects of recent progress in this field. (This is a talk that was given as an Invited Topical Talk at SIAM Annual Meeting in Portland, July 2004.)
