This is a follow-up to a 2008 lecture by stream ecologist Professor Judy Stamps in the OSU ecosystems informatics colloquium series. Professor Stamps described observed sequential search behavior used by certain animal species when establishing nesting habitat. Most striking in connection with both field and laboratory experiments was the discovery of an initial refractory period in the search process. In this talk I will discuss the occurrence of refractory periods in connection with well-known optimal search algorithms and indicate some related research directions suggested by habitat selection.
