Families of group presentations often arise by considering a basic shape to one or more of the relators and then varying a parameter such as an exponent or the number of generators and/or relators. A basic question in such investigations is to determine which parameter values yield presentations for finite groups. Surveying results of such investigations, a pattern of transitional behavior can sometimes be observed, or at least inferred. I will describe the status of an ongoing joint project with Gerald Williams (University of Essex) along these lines.
