Abstract: 

First we describe various examples of elliptic PDEs and systems that
arise in applications, and for each we give a weak formulation
of a corresponding boundary-value problem as a variational principle.

Then we give a related weak formulation of the corresponding parabolic
evolution equations. This leads to an inf-sup condition that
characterizes operators with closed range.
