In this introductory talk, the notion of DSY will be presented in the context of binary branching trees. In DSYs, the time between branching is a random variable that can depends on the vertex at which the branching occurs. DSY arise naturally in semi-linear and quasi-linear PDEs, as well as in applications in aging and population biology. The talk will focus on a couple of examples, in lieu of a general abstract theory.
