An exotic sphere is a smooth manifold which is homeomorphic but
not diffeomorphic to a sphere. The discovery of such objects in the 1950s
shocked the Mathematical world and later lead to the awarding of the
Fields Medal to John Milnor. In this talk, I will give some background to
this classic result and provide an elementary overview of the construction
of an exotic sphere in dimension seven.
